The Nineties by Chuck Klosterman

Subtitled “A Book”, this latest installment from Chuck Klosterman is a periodic account of the 1990s with a particular focus on the cultural relevance of the historical events of the decade.  He examines the significant elements of the time and illustrates how they were perceived in real time, rather than how we view those same events now.

As a 43-year-old who came of age in the 90s, the book is fascinating and nostalgic.  Why exactly was Nirvana’s impact on American culture so big? How did the advent of VCRs and video rental stores change a generation’s view of the world? Why was Titanic such a surprise hit? How did Ross Perot change the course of history?

The topics are enthralling and Klosterman’s particular viewpoint is fascinating.  Admittedly, I’m a huge Klosterman homer and appreciate all of this work.  If you fall into that camp, you’ll undoubtedly love this book as well.

At 384 pages or 12 hours, it’s a mid-length read that is worth every second.
