Understand this: No one gives a shit. That thing you’re working on, that big idea you have, the funny story you want to tell? No one really cares. No one is interested.

I know what you’re thinking. That’s not true. My wife cares. My friends care. My business partners are interested. Yes, yes, and yes. But, that’s not what I mean. If a stranger asks you for the time, she cares about your response. That’s not the point I’m making.

People care about your input as far as it affects them. Beyond that, they aren’t too interested in what you’re thinking, doing, or planning. It’s not because they’re mean. It’s because they’re busy with their own thinking and planning. And be honest, do you ever care about what they are up to?

My point isn’t to call the world selfish. My point is to encourage you to be selfish. Be selfish with your goals, your ideas, your plans. All of it. Make sure it’s what you want. Do the things that make you happy. Focus on the things that stimulate you and that get you excited. Because if you’re doing things to impress others, you’re going to be let down.

Don’t do it because other people will see how smart you are. Don’t do it because it will show how creative you can be. Don’t do it because it will make you attractive. Because trust me, no one will give a shit. No one will care in the way you want them to. The payoff you’re looking for will be flat. That high you are anticipating when they marvel at your abilities will be disappointing. Make sure you’re doing it because it’s what you want. Do it because you will be proud. Do it because it will prove something to yourself. Do it because it’s a goal that’ll make you feel good.

Don’t work for anyone else’s applause because it won’t be as loud as you’ve imagined. No one cares and they never have.
